SO MUCH to learn at this workshop!

What fuels brain growth in an infant when at birth it's brain is 25% the size of an adult brain, doubles in size by age 1 year, and increases to three-quarter the size of an adult brain by age 3?

What does a child need for secure emotional development?

Does your child slouch or unable to sit still? Tummy time is important in babies for development of back stabilizing muscles, which are crucial in visual, oral-motor and speech development; development of vestibular and visual sensory systems, all of which contribute to good postural strength and orientation in space.

How important is movement and reflex development in learning, coordination, and sensory perception?

Heidi Roibal

Heidi an Infant Mental Health Specialist with the Child Development Center Health Science Services at the University of New Mexico. Her topic is  “Becoming a Circle of Security Jedi: Learn How to Master the Force of Attachment”.  Circle of Security International seeks to build strong, resilient families by increasing attachment and security.

Petra Pirc

Petra is a licensed physical therapist working with the Los Alamos Public Schools for 15 years. Her topic, “If Children Came With a Manual: The Importance of Sensory Motor Development in the Early Years,” was inspired by the increasing number of young children she works with showing sensorimotor and cognitive developmental delays. Because movement is integral to brain development and impacts education, she works to integrate primitive movement reflexes, increase sensory organization, enhance low muscle tone, speech delays and behavioral and academic difficulties, using a Dynamic Systems Theory Approach.
